Hedy Andersson, Oakland-based yoga instructor
I began my yoga practice in Seattle in 1996, and took the leap to become a certified yoga instructor in 2010. My personal practice and teaching focuses on using the
breath to bring mindfulness and ease into all aspects of practice. For me, balance is at the heart of yoga, and I encourage students to find their own balance
of effort and surrender in my classes. My teaching is guided by my first-hand experience of finding freedom through proper physical alignment, exploration of
perceived boundaries, and honoring experience as it is; building strength, flexibility and awareness.
My professional life outside of yoga:
I graduated from Fairhaven College at Western Washington University in 2005.
I designed my own academic concentration entitled Political, Economic and Social Analysis for Just Policy.
During my Senior year at Western I was an intern with the Washington State Legislature
. My experience in the Legislature - particularly through attending
Education and Juvenile Justice Committee hearings - helped me to realize that ensuring well-being and opportunity for our kids is
not only one of the most impactful means of building a more just society, it's also my passion.
After graduating I volunteered for a year with Child Protective Services, further affirming my desire to work on behalf of our most vulnerable kids.
In 2008 I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to pursue such a career. I currently work as the Field Coordinator for Preschool California,
an advocacy organization working to increase access to effective early learning programs throughout California, starting with the kids who need it most.
